Dr. Rami Edward Lutfi
Leading figure in the fields of metabolic and bariatric surgery

Dr Rami Edward Lutfi is a leading figure in metabolic and bariatric surgery. He is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He also holds board certification from the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
In addition to his academic roles, Dr Lutfi is the President and Founder of the Chicago Institute of Advanced Surgery, a multi-speciality corporation serving acute care hospitals and ambulatory surgical centres in the Greater Chicago Area. He also founded and presides over the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics, a tertiary care MBSAQIP-certified centre providing comprehensive weight management solutions for obesity.
Dr Lutfi has held several key positions in his career, including Section Chief of Metabolic Surgery at Advocate Aurora Illinois Masonic Hospital, Medical Director of the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics, Founder and Fellowship Director at Advocate Illinois Masonic Bariatric Fellowship, and CEO of The Chicago Institute of Advanced Surgery.
Earlier, he held prestigious positions like the Chairman of Surgery at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at St. Joseph Presence Hospital, and Site Residency Program Director at Little Company of Mary, UIC General Surgery Residency Program.
Educated at Damascus University School of Medicine, Dr Lutfi completed his general surgery training and research fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Vanderbilt University, respectively. He is fluent in English, French, and Arabic.
Dr Lutfi’s contribution to his field is underpinned by his involvement in various societies and committees. He served as the President of the ASMBS Foundation and has been an elected member of the ASMBS Executive Council. His contributions to bariatric surgery have been recognised with numerous awards and honours, including the Excellence in Clinical Care Practice Award from the Foundation of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Lloyd Nyhus, MD Award of Academic Excellence.
